Looking back to the 1st NYS Intersectional Championships, they were held at Barton Hall, at Cornell University, in Ithaca on March 9th, 1963. It was a One Day Tournament that featured a total of 96 wrestlers from only eight sections. Using four mats, the quarterfinals were at 1PM, the semifinals at 3PM and the Consolations and Finals at 7PM. It took about 8 hours to crowned an individual state champion. The first sectional team title was won by Section Eight (121 points) followed by Section Three (75) and Section Eleven (74). Long Island crowned 8 champions and awards were only given to the top four place winners and there was no MOW Award. The first year for the MOW was in 1970 and won by Mike Phillips (215) of Cooperstown-3 and in 1974, medals were given to the top six finishers.
